Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant, Nebraska

Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant is located in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, adjacent to the Missouri River, from where it once drew its cooling water. It is home to a single pressurized water reactor, whose output capacity is 482MW, making it one of the smallest commercial nuclear power plants in the United States in terms of power output. The plant was in operation from 1973 until 2016, when owner Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) decided to permanently shut down the plant for financial reasons. Since its closure, all spent fuel has been removed from the reactor and placed in a spent fuel pool, until it can be transferred to dry cask storage contained within an on-site Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI). Currently OPPD's plan is to place the plant in SAFSTOR mode until 2060, at which time decommissioning would begin, at an estimated cost of $1.2 billion.
