Fort Hunter Liggett, California

Army training and testing ground in the rolling hills of Central California, purchased from the estate of William Randolph Hearst in 1940. The installation covers 165,000 acres, used by active military and reserve units. It is a primary maneuver area for mechanized units of the reserves in the western United States. Though some of the installation's test and experimentation activities were relocated to Fort Bliss, Texas, the base continues to be active. Special operations training takes place on base and in 95,000 additional acres in the adjacent Los Padres National Forest. The base technically now also includes nearby Camp Roberts, a 45,000-acre base used for reserve units training. A tank trail connects the two bases. Within the cantonment area is a historic Hearst Ranch house, and adjacent to the cantonment area is the historic Mission San Antonio de Padua, founded in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra.
