Fort Lewis is a busy 86,176 acre Army base, located south of Tacoma. One of the nation's top maneuver installations, Fort Lewis employs over 25,000 people, making it the fourth largest employer in the state. First opened in World War One, the base expanded into the north areas (across the interstate) in World War Two. Training grounds, including urban environments and open prairie live-fire zones, extend for 20 miles, from Steilacoom to south of Olympia. Operates the 500 square mile Yakima Range in eastern Washington. In 2010, Fort Lewis merged with McChord Air Force Base to become Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM).
