General Dynamics Electric Boat Division, Connecticut

General Dynamics Electric Boat Division in Groton, is one of the most significant submarine manufacturing sites in the world, having built both the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine in 1954, as well as the USS George Washington, the first ballistic missile submarine in 1959. 18 Ohio class (popularly known as Trident) nuclear submarines were built here (costing around $1.5 billion each), the majority of Los Angeles class submarines (out of a total of 62), and all of the Seawolf attack submarines, in addition to other classes and models. The first of at least 20 of the Navy's newest attack submarine known as the Virginia class, are currently being built here ($4.2 billion for the first four), in a partnership with Northrop Grumman Newport News (now Huntington Ingalls-Newport News Shipbuilding). In addition to the Groton plant, Electric Boat operates a hull-fabrication facility at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, as well as an engineering lab in New Landing, Connecticut.
