Genoa Power Plant, Wisconsin
The Genoa Power Plant has two old coal-fired units, and one small nuclear plant, called the La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor. It is located in Genoa, Wisconsin, along the east bank of the Mississippi River. The nuclear plant was intended to demonstrate the peaceful use of atomic energy, and was a joint project between the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), and owner Dairyland Power Cooperative. The plant featured a single boiling water reactor with an output capacity of 48MW, which was in operation from 1968 until 1987, when it was shut down. By 2012, all spent fuel had been transferred to an on-site Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI), located on the southern end of the property. Remediation of the site will occur at some point. Next to it is a coal-fired power plant, known as Genoa Unit 3, which opened in 1969, and produces 379 MW of power. Unit 1 was a 14MW coal-fired plant built in 1941, and closed in 1985.
