GM Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Plant, Michigan
A major GM car assembly plant, located three miles north of its headquarters in Detroit. It was built on the site of a Dodge plant, which operated from 1911-1979, and was torn down in 1981. GM opened this plant in 1985, and was originally a source for the company’s Cadillac cars, as well as other plush sedans, like Buick Le Sabres, and Rivieras. It has also produced Chevy Volts, Impalas, and Malibus. More than 4 million vehicles have been produced here, by around 1,800 employees. It is one of less than a dozen vehicle assembly plants operated by GM in the USA. Another dozen or so have been shuttered over the years.
