GM Fairfax Assembly Plant, Kansas
This plant in Kansas City has been one of GMs largest and most productive car assembly plants. Around 3,000 workers produce around one car every 58 seconds, and have produced more than 12 million cars over the years. It is one of less than a dozen vehicle assembly plants operated by GM in the USA. Another dozen or so have been shuttered over the years. The original building at the site was an aircraft plant next to an airfield, that made Mitchell B-25 bombers during WWII. After the war GM made Buicks and Pontiacs along side f-84 jet fighters. This old plant ceased production in 1986, and car production moved into a new $1billion, 3 million square-foot plant next door, built on top of the former runways. It makes mostly Malibus and Cadillacs. The old aircraft plant, once known as Air Force Plant #2, was raised in 1989.
