Heidecke Lake, Illinois

This strangely-shaped lake, more than three miles long, next to the Illinois River, was originally built as a cooling lake for the Collins Station Power Plant. After the plant's closure and decommissioning in 2004, it has become a well-regarded recreational lake, albeit one which prohibits "swimming, wading, water skiing, and sail boating," the main attraction being fishing. It is regularly stocked with various species of sport fish, including crappie and muskellunge, as well as largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, yellow, and in particular, hybrid striped bass.
