Hingham Ammunition Depot Site, Massachusetts

This now abandoned 991-acre industrial complex was used for munitions storage and weapons assembly during World War II, and into the 1950's. Missile components and rocket fuels were tested here as well. In the production buildings, heavy walls of cement separated the assembly alcoves from one another, with a shared glass wall to permit an explosion to escape with minimum damage to the rest of the building. After decommissioning the base, the Navy consigned the site to the town of Hingham in 1971. Most of this area is now Wompatuck State Park, near Hingham, though a few acres remain off limits, as some warehouses and weapons storage magazines from the original weapons depot remain.
