Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, New York
Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is located in Buchanan, New York, 30 miles from New York City, adjacent to the Hudson River, from which it draws its cooling water. The plant has three reactors on site. Unit 1, the original ConEdison plant with a net output capacity of 257MW, was in operation from 1962 until 1974, and has remained closed since then. Units 2 and 3 have been in operation since the early 1970's, making the plant one of the oldest still functioning in the U.S., in a region with some of the highest population density in the country. Unit 2 has an output capacity of 1,028MW, while Unit 3's output capacity is 1,041MW. The plant was purchased by its current owner, Entergy Nuclear Operations, in 2000, and the company has agreed to close the plant around 2021, and begin the lengthy decommissioning and remediation process, that will no doubt take decades. All of the reactor's spent fuel is currently stored on-site in dry storage casks.
