Janesville Assembly Plant Site, Wisconsin
One of the largest automotive assembly plants in the USA, and one of the largest buildings of any kind, was located here until it was mostly torn down in 2020. It first opened in 1919, to make farm machinery for the Samson Tractor division of General Motors, but soon GM move truck production here from Flint, Michigan. By 1923 the plant was making Chevrolets, which it did for much of its existence. At its peak, in 1977, 7,100 people worked at the plant, which had grown to cover 4,800,000 square feet. It was making SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe in 2008, when the company announced it would be closing the plant. It remained on stand-by though 2015, and was put on the market in 2017. In 2019 new owners began tearing it down and will redevelop the 250 acre site.
