Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Center, New Jersey
A former Naval Air Station, now a naval aviation research and development base. Naval air station functions have been shifted to Jacksonville Naval Air Station and Patuxent River Naval Station. This was the national center for the development and deployment of rigid airships, and was the nation's primary airship airport in the 1930s, and the site of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster. Several large hangars that once housed the airships are still standing. Large and unique naval training field facilities exist here, especially on the west end of the base. Lakehurst is located on the eastern end of the Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base complex, in central New Jersey.
