Lakeview Gusher, California

The most productive single oil well in California spewed as much as 90,000 barrels of oil a day for 18 months when it was first tapped in 1910. A 60-acre lake of oil formed on the site, on which several people floated about in small skiffs. Eventually 2,000 wooden oil derricks were erected to drill for more oil in the area. The site is now marked with a stone monument.
