Lockheed Fighter Plane Plant, Texas

A former bomber plant west of Fort Worth, Texas, once known as US Air Force Plant 4, is still one of the largest military aircraft plants in the USA. It has a building that is nearly a mile long, and 650 feet wide, a footprint of more than 3 million square feet. In the 1940s and ‘50s, B-36 bombers were made here by Consolidated Aircraft, later Convair. Now it is operated by Lockheed, and makes or has made F-16s, F-22s, and F-35 fighter planes. The plants various buildings cover more than 6.5 million square feet, and employ around 17,000 people. The name Air Force Plant 4 is primarily historic, and refers to a time between 1947 and to the 1960s, when the Air Force designated  85 or so aircraft, rocket, and missile production facilities as critical for the Air Force. The plant is located at Carswell Air Force Base, which was a Strategic Air Command bomber base for years, and is now known as Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base.
