Los Angeles River Headwaters, California
The origin of the Los Angeles River is generally considered to be where Bell Creek and Calabasas Creek converge in the Canoga Park area of the San Fernando Valley. The channelized river then flows to the Sepulveda Basin, then east to Glendale, where it turns south, flows through downtown Los Angeles, then to points south all the way to Long Beach Harbor, where it discharges into the ocean. Most of the river is channelized in concrete, but it is why the city of Los Angeles is where it is. In 2014, the $11.5 million Los Angeles River Headwaters greenway opened. Spanning five acres, the greenway is but one project out of many, detailed in the Los Angeles River master plan.
