Lummi Flats, Washington

The remnants of a Navy communications site remain on the coast at Lummi Flats, a tidal estuary near Bellingham, operated as part of the Marietta Navy Base. The base closed by the 1970's, and much of the property and buildings were taken over by the Lummi Nation Indian Reservation. Beyond the flats, a four mile long dike forms a pool used by the Lummi in an aquiculture operation, raising salmon, oysters, and clams.
