Marinette Marine, Wisconsin

The company at this shipyard was established during World War II, building relatively small ships for the war effort. Since then it has continued to build small to medium sized commercial and military vessels, a total of more than 1,300 vessels. These include three Staten Island ferries for New York City, dozens of large tugboats, and many ships for the US Coast Guard. In 2000, it was purchased by the Manitowoc Company, a major construction crane company that works all over the world, but is based nearby in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Manitowoc has since sold it to an Italian ship building company, Fincantieri Marine Group, which has partnered with Lockheed Martin to produce two major types of military ships at the yard, the Littoral Combat Ship, and the FFG guided missile frigate. Fincantieri operates two other shipyards in Wisconsin, a large outdoor yard in Sturgeon Bay, and another in Green Bay, Ace Marine, which is entirely indoors and makes small high speed patrol and law enforcement boats.
