Massport Container Yard, Massachusetts

The Conley Terminal in South Boston is the main container yard at the port of Boston. From here, cargo can be off-loaded and shipped via truck or Conrail to the midwest in 24 to 36 hours. The yard handles around 1.5 million metric tons of cargo a year, importing cargo from Europe and Asia. Among the top imports are beer, wine, shoes, clothing, and frozen fish. Exports include lumber, animal hides, and dairy products. As with most other American ports, more is imported than is exported. A third of the containers that arrive at the port are shipped back out empty.
