McNeil Island Corrections Center, Washington

This island in the Carr Inlet is a 20 square mile penal colony. Beginning in 1875, prisons were established on the island, including a maximum security prison on the shore closest to Tacoma, and a minimum security annex, which housed a "Work Ethic Camp." Though some of the grounds of McNeil were used as a cattle farm for prison work programs, there has been no other developments on the island, and no industries or residences on the island unrelated to the correctional programs. In 2011, one of the prisons was closed, but so far little has changed, besides the abandonment of the buildings.
