Milk Can, Rhode Island
Image
The thirty-two-and-a-half foot tall Milk Can served as an ice cream shop when it opened in 1931, and was originally located in Lincoln along Route 146. Over time the owner expanded both the menu as well as the physical facility, until closing it in 1968. After purchasing it in 1988, the new owners elected to move it to the neighboring community of North Smithfield, roughly one mile from the original location. Unfortunately due to a series of unanticipated complications (not the least of which was the discovery of heavily contaminated groundwater beneath its new site), the Milk Can never reopened, and has remained closed since 1991.
