Millstone Nuclear Power Plant, Connecticut
The Millstone nuclear plant, on Long Island Sound near New London, is the only multi-unit nuclear power plant in New England, and is New England's largest electrical generating facility. The first reactor, Unit 1, went online in 1970, followed by Unit 2 in 1975, and Unit 3, in 1986, giving the plant the capacity to generate more than 2,700 megawatts of power. In 1995, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) ordered Unit 1 shut down due to safety concerns, and it was permanently closed in 1998. In 1996, Units 2 and 3 were temporarily shut down due to safety violations, but were back online in 1998 and 1999. Dominion Nuclear Connecticut, the operator as of 2001, has decided to leave Unit 1 in safe storage mode until 2048. The NRC has extended the licenses of both Units 2 and 3 until 2035 and 2045 respectively.
