Minuteman Missile Visitor Center, South Dakota
The visitor center the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site opened in 2015 to display fixed exhibits and films about the history of intercontinental ballistic missile in the Great Plains. It also serves as the gateway, public contact point, and restrooms, for people coming to visit the Minuteman Missile silo and launch control center nearby that are preserved by the federal government for the public to visit. The underground Launch Control Facility (called Delta-01) is located five miles west down Interstate 90 from the Visitor Center (at exit 127), and the underground missile silo (called Delta-09) is another ten miles west of that (at exit 116). The Visitor Center (at exit 131) was built on undeveloped land and opened in 2015, 16 years after the Minuteman National Historic Site was officially established. Before it opened, a temporary visitor contact station was located in an office trailer on the other side of the interstate.
