Mount Evans Auto Road Summit Parking Lot, Colorado

The highest paved road in the country dead-ends at the highest paved parking lot in the country, at the summit of Mount Evans, at 14,130 feet. There is a small observatory at the summit, the Meyer-Womble Observatory, and the preserved ruins of the Crest House, which was known as the “highest structure in the world” when it was finished in 1941. It was mostly destroyed in a propane explosion in 1979. The road is a popular tourist attraction, and there are other interpretive plaques at the summit. It is also possible to feel very dizzy and short of oxygen at this level.
