National Archives Washington National Records Center, Maryland

The National Archives manages this large records building in Suitland, Maryland (just north of the Smithsonian’s principal off-site storage facility, the Museum Support Center). The facility was constructed in 1967 as the Washington National Records Center for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and is still used by them. It, and possibly underground facilities next to it,  is also used as one of four national  “Mega Centers” by the Federal Protective Service. FPS is the federal police force for the Department of Homeland Security, charged with protecting domestic federal buildings and assets. The FPS operates the three other Mega Centers at Battle Creek, Michigan; Denver; and Philadelphia. They serve as alarm monitoring and dispatch centers for thousands of federal sites across the country. The building is located on a secure federal office park called the Suitland Federal Center, notorious for real and alleged underground facilities.
