Naval Air Station Brunswick Site, Maine
One of the last active-duty (meaning non-reserve forces) military airfields left in the New England, NAS Brunswick had around 4,000 military and civilian personnel associated with it, making it Maine's second largest employer, before closing in May 2011. Naval surveillance and support aircraft (mostly P-3's) were based at the NAS, supporting Atlantic Fleet ships with supply, rescue, and antisubmarine operations. In 1987, the 3,200-acre site was declared a Superfund cleanup site, due to soil and groundwater contamination. Extensive remediation efforts have occurred since then, while on-site monitoring activities are ongoing. The base has been transformed into a business park, now known as Brunswick Landing. It includes a civilian airport known as the Brunswick Executive Airport.
