New Madrid Power Plant, Missouri
The New Madrid Power Plant is located in Marston, Missouri, adjacent to the Mississippi River, from which it draws its cooling water. The plant is home to two coal-fired units whose combined nameplate output capacity is 1,200MW. Units 1 and 2 have output capacities of 600MW apiece, becoming operational in 1972 and 1977 respectively. Wyoming's Powder River Basin is the source of the plant's coal. The plant is owned and operated by Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. It is next to a major aluminum plant, and two miles from the “tripoint” boundary of Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky, located in the middle of the river.
