North Island Naval Air Station, California
The North Island Naval Air Station, at 5,000 acres, is one of the largest and busiest military bases on the West Coast. It is located at the top of the Coronado peninsula that encloses the protected port of San Diego, the principal naval port on the Pacific Coast of the USA. North Island has an airfield, and is home port of two aircraft carriers, the Navy's only two Deep-Submergence Vehicles, and numerous other Navy ships. With all the ships that call this home in port, the population of the base rises to over 30,000. North Island is also a non-strategic nuclear weapons depot, and operates the Naval Auxiliary Landing Facility on San Clemente Island, and the Outlying Field, a helicopter training facility at Imperial Beach.
