Olney Federal Support Center, Maryland

Olney is a communications site and underground bunker owned by FEMA. It was first developed as civil defense training site in 1951, based on WWII British bunker plans, and included a mock city facility on the site. It was further developed as one of eight sites proposed by the Office of Civil Defense and Mobility, FEMA’s precursor agency. Since then, it has been an alternate operations center for FEMA, and a control center for the National Warning System. It has several different antennas, used for satellite communications, as well as high-frequency communications. There is also a former Nike Missile launch site at the 70 acre site.
