Onizuka Air Force Station Site, California
The Blue Cube, as some referred to it, was Onizuka Air Force Station, a military and intelligence satellite control facility. Operational from 1960 until its closing in 2010, it was built as a spy satellite control center to operate the Lockheed/CIA Corona program, whose hardware was built next door at the Lockheed plant. That program ended in the 1970s, but others replaced it. Prior to its closure, many of the Cube's functions were relocated to other sites, such as Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado, as well as Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. In 2014, most of the base's buildings were demolished to make way for new tenants, such as the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Sunnyvale Fire Department.
