Oregon State Hospital, Oregon
Image

This state hospital in Salem, Oregon’s capital, was built in 1883, and still included an old-school psychiatric ward when the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was filmed there in 1975. Several people who worked there were cast in the film, including the hospital’s superintendent, adding another layer of reality to the film narrative. The film had a lasting effect on culture, as well as mental treatment. Part of the hospital has been turned into the Museum of Mental Health, which features straightjackets and other historic mental institution devices, and displays about the famous film shot there.
