Owens Valley Radio Observatory, California
Image

A major radio astronomy observatory site, with numerous large and small steerable dishes. Facilities include: The Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), which was comprised of 23 antennas of varying sizes; the Evolved Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA), a solar radio telescope with 15 dishes; the OVRO 40 meter telescope, used to study blazars (a type of quasar); and the C-Band All Sky Survey (C-BASS) dish, used in the study of cosmic microwave background radiation. Most of the site is operated by Caltech, with the exception of the neighboring Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) antenna, which is one of a network of ten antenna sites across the United States that make up the VLBA, a National Science Foundation project.
