Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant, New Jersey
Originally licensed in 1969, Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant was the oldest operating nuclear power plant in the U.S., until its closure in 2018. The plant contained a single boiling water reactor with a design output capacity of 650MW, and was owned by Exelon Corporation. In 2010, Exelon entered into an agreement with the state of New Jersey, whereby the plant would be closed within a decade, in return for not having to install expensive new cooling towers as mandated by revised environmental regulations. Currently Exelon hopes to move all spent reactor fuel into dry cask storage by 2024, followed by the placing of the plant into safe storage mode (SAFSTOR), until final decommissioning can begin sometime in 2075.
