Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Richland, Washington
Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) is the principal research organization working on the environmental, technical, and remedial sciences at the DOE’s Hanford Reservation, which is often called the most contaminated place in the USA, due to its nuclear research dating back to the Manhattan Project. PNNL has other facilities too, and is one of several U.S. Department of Energy national, multiprogram laboratories, and has a staff of around 4,400, with an annual budget of around $1billion. PNNL conducts research in nearly every field of basic science to solve problems in the areas of the environment, energy, health and national security. Currently laboratory staff are engaged in a multitude of research projects for the DOE, other federal agencies and private clients. PNNL is operated by Battelle Lab, a nonprofit R&D lab that is involved in numerous government and private R&D projects.
