Perky's Bat Tower, Florida

In the late 1920s real estate developer Richter Clyde Perky built this thirty foot tower as an artificial bat roost, complete with features such as a central guano removal chute and roosting shelves. The area was undevelopable, as it was infested with mosquitoes, and Perky hoped to rid the area of the pests by attracting bats, which were thought to be their predators. Although the tower was based off of bat researcher Charles Campbell's successful bat tower design, Perky's structure failed to attract any bats. It is now home to a large osprey nest, and the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has adopted it as their founding monument.
