Perry Nuclear Power Plant, Ohio

Perry Nuclear Power Plant is located in Perry, Ohio, along the southern shore of Lake Erie, from which it draws its cooling water. It is home to a single boiling water reactor, whose output capacity is 1,256MW. Its operating license was issued in 1986. It is operated by FirstEnergy Solutions, on behalf of FirstEnergy Corporation. There are two 516-ft tall cooling towers to be found on site, although only one of them is functional. As originally conceived, the plant was to include a second reactor. Construction of both units began in 1974, but by 1988, construction was put on hold for Unit 2, due to changes in the electricity marketplace. In 1994, the construction of Unit 2 ceased altogether, despite the completion of many major structures, including the second 516-ft cooling tower.
