Pfizer Kalamazoo Plant, Michigan
This pharmaceutical plant is often cited as Pfizer’s largest in the USA. It covers 1,200 acres, and has 125 buildings, and 4 million square feet of production space, producing more than 150 medicines. It started out as the first big plant built by Upjohn, which was founded in Kalamazoo by William Upjohn in 1886. Upjohn was purchased by other companies, which eventually became part of Pfizer. Pfizer is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, and one of the largest companies in the USA, in revenue. The company was founded in 1849, by Charles Pfizer, and grew quickly due to its popular citric acid-based products. During and after World War II, it streamlined the production of penicillin and other antibiotics. In the 1980s and 1990s, it developed popular products including Zoloft, Lipitor, and Viagra. In 2000, it became the second largest pharmaceutical company in the world when it bought Warner-Lambert, for $112 billion. Pfizer is headquartered on 42nd Street, in Manhattan.
