Piney Island Range, North Carolina

The Piney Island Range, also known as BT-11 (bombing target eleven) is located on and around a marshy peninsula in Pamlico Sound, on the central coast of North Carolina. The range covers around 10,000 acres, and has two circular targets and an airstrip target. Vehicle hulks, including old military aircraft, are used as targets and props. The range is on an island with no road access, so target props are brought in by helicopter and barge through the range’s port and scoring tower at Jack’s Bay. Old vessels are also used as targets on the water parts of the range, sometimes towed behind remote-control tugs. There are other fixed targets on barges and ships elsewhere around Pamlico County.
