Pontiac GM Plant Site, Michigan
This plant, located in Pontiac, a city north of Detroit, was the main producer of, suitably, the Pontiac line of GM cars, starting in 1927. It produced Pontiac Bonneville’s, Catalina’s, Grand Am’s, Tempest’s, Super Chief’s, Safari’s, Torpedo’s, GTO’s, and more, ending, with the Fiero, in 1988, when the plant closed for good. Some of its operations moved to the Orion Assembly Plant. Much of the building remains on site, underutilized, though some of the ancillary structures are in use by GM as its performance and racing center, and propulsions division. The US Postal Service has a large regional distribution center at the site now too.
