Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant, Minnesota

Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant is 40 miles from Minneapolis, near Red Wing, Minnesota, adjacent to the Mississippi River, from which it draws its cooling water. The plant is home to two pressurized water reactors, each of which has an output capacity of 530MW. Unit 1's operating license was issued in 1973, while Unit 2's operating license was issued in 1974. Four mechanical cooling towers are also to be found on site, as well as an Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI), in which spent radioactive material is stored in dry casks. The plant is owned by Xcel Energy Inc.
