Prairie State Power Plant, Illinois

The Prairie State Power Plant (also known as Prairie State Energy Campus), is a large coal-fired power plant, with two units, and a combined output of 1,600 megawatts. It is a recently constructed plant, becoming operational in 2012. An underground mine adjacent to the plant provides its coal, which is transported via a conveyor belt system. The project was initiated by Peabody Energy, who subsequently sold its interest to a consortium of several Midwestern public power utilities, spread across nine states. The plant is operated by the Prairie State Generating Company, LLC.
