Quake Lake Landslide Visitor Center, Montana
The U.S. Forest Service built this visitor center in 1967 to provide interpretation and an overlook for the 1959 earthquake that triggered a massive landslide here, near Yellowstone Park. The landslide blocked the narrow canyon damming the Madison River, and forming a new lake, called Earthquake Lake. 28 people lost their lives in the 7.5 magnitude quake. Houses and the damage highway remained for many years afterwards. The visitor center was built on top of the landslide itself.
