Rand Mine, California

The three mines in this complex, the Yellow Aster, Lamont, and Baltic, were generally referred to as the Rand Mine. They were located in a district littered with mineshafts and mining ruins from over 100 years of mining in the Red Mountain, Johannesburg, and Randsburg regions. The Rand Mine in its last incarnation was operated by the Rand Mine Company, then a subsidiary of Glamis Gold Company, until Glamis was acquired by Goldcorp USA in 2006. Mining operations ceased in 2004, followed by extensive environmental remediation efforts which were completed in 2012. The inhabited and scenic "ghost town" of Randsburg was once the center of this mining district.
