Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Power Plants, New Jersey
A large nuclear energy complex, located 15 miles south of Wilmington, near the mouth of Delaware Bay, the site is sometimes referred to separately as the Salem Nuclear Power Plant, and the Hope Creek Nuclear Power Plant, though they exist together on a 740 acre site, on the water’s edge, and use the bay’s water for cooling. The Salem plant has two pressurized water reactors, Unit 1, with an output of 1,180MW, and Unit 2, with an output of 1,177MW. Their operating l licenses were granted in 1976 and 1981, respectively. The plant is operated by PSEG Nuclear, LLC, who also own 57% of the plant, with Exelon Corporation owning the remainder. The adjacent Hope Creek Nuclear Power Plant contains a single boiling water reactor, whose total generating capacity is 1,180MW. It’s operating license was granted in 1986, and it is owned and operated by PSEG Nuclear LLC. The plant's 512-foot-tall natural draft cooling tower is a notable local landmark. Collectively the plants comprise the second largest nuclear power generating site in the U.S.
