Salem Sue Giant Cow, North Dakota
Image

Salem Sue is called the World’s Largest Holstein Cow, something that is probably needless to question. The sculpture is 38 feet high, 50 feet long, and weighs 12,000 pounds. It was commissioned by the local town (New Salem)’s Lions Club, manufactured in Wisconsin, shipped in pieces, and erected on site in 1974. It is located on a hill next to exit 127 of Interstate 94, the main east/west route through the state, and the exit for New Salem. North Dakota has some of the largest representational creature sculptures in the country. Perhaps it’s the bigness of the state and the landscape. It may also have something to do with trying to get motorists to stop and visit local towns and businesses.
