Sassafras Mountain Summit Viewing Platform, South Carolina
The summit of Sassafras Mountain is the highest point of land in South Carrolina, 3,560 feet above sea level. Though recent grading is said to have lowered the site to 3,533 feet, this has been made up for by the construction of a substantial viewing platform plaza, with public restrooms. It is one of the 28 of the 50 highest points in the 50 states that are accessible by car. It is located on the border of North Carolina, where much of the new facilities actually are located, though the tower itself is on the South Carolina side of the line.
