Schlitz Milwaukee Brewery Site, Wisconsin
Schlitz, “the beer that made Milwaukee famous,” operated a large brewery here starting in the late 19th century. The company passed the million barrels a year mark, first met by in-town rival Pabst, in 1902, and the brewer soon surpassed Pabst to become the largest brewer in the USA. In the 1970s, Schlitz lost out to its chief rival Anheuser-Busch, maker of Budweiser, based in St. Louis, by then the most popular beer in the USA. Schlitz was bought by Strohs, and Strohs was bought by Pabst. The former brewery was redeveloped into a mixed use development called Schlitz Park, though the original brewhouse was demolished in 2013. In the popular TV show Laverne and Shirley the eponymous duo worked at the fictional Shotz Brewery, an allusion to Schlitz.
