Sherwood Disposal Site, Washington

A former uranium ore processing site in eastern Washington State. It was remediated between 1992 to 1996, and includes a 100-acre disposal cell, constructed to contain the radioactive tailings and mill buildings. The mill was operated from 1978 to 1984 by the Western Nuclear Company. It was located next to an open pit mine which was a few miles away from another open pit uranium mine and a former mill site near the town of Ford. The Sherwood Disposal Cell was constructed in 1996, and contains 2.4 million cubic yards of tailings and debris.
