Lake Superior is the largest, northernmost, remotest, and most treacherous of the Great Lakes. Offshore from Whitefish Point is known as the graveyard of the Great Lakes, due to the number of wrecks that have occurred in the area. The point has a historic Coast Guard station, with a lighthouse, foghorn, which has seen lots of action. Some of the buildings have been turned into the Shipwreck Museum, which has, among its relics, the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald, the most famous ship to wreck in the lake, going down in a storm in 1975, 17 miles off Whitefish Point.
