Built as one of a few dozen radar stations along the nation’s perimeter for the Air Defense Command in the 1950s. It became part of the nationwide SAGE system in 1960. In 1980, radar functions ceased, and the site was closed. It was taken over by the state of Oregon, and used as a minimum-security prison, called the Shutter Creek Correctional Institution.
