The Upper Peninsula town of Ishpeming is known for its massive iron mines as well as being the “birthplace of organized skiing in the United States.” It was in Ishpeming that the National Ski Association, a group which helped develop skiing as a sport and industry, was formed in 1905. One of the largest ski libraries is located at the Ski Museum in town, which opened in 1992, and has a nicely sloped roof.
